Banda Aceh, Indonesia - On the morning of December 26, 2004 a magnitude 9.3 earthquake struck off the Northwest coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

 

The earthquake was followed with a devastating tsunami that killed approximately 230,000 people in 13 Indian Ocean countries, including Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India.

 The worst hit was the Indonesian city of Banda Aceh where the following images were made during the days following the earthquake and again, three months later during a second trip.
